guide

knob notes remembers where your knobs were. pick a pedal, dial in a sound, save it as a preset, and get it back exactly as you left it — weeks later, on a different amp, at a different gig.

quick start

four steps, about two minutes. nothing to install, no account needed.

01

find your pedal

open the library and search by name, brand, or category. short brand names work — typing ehx finds electro-harmonix. if your pedal is not there yet, build it in the builder.
02

dial in a sound

click a pedal to open its device page. drag a knob up or down to turn it. the numbers next to the pedal update as you go, and you can type exact values there instead.
03

save it as a preset

give it a name and save. add notes if you want — what song it is for, which amp, what you were chasing. the preset stores every knob, switch, and led state on the pedal.
04

put it on a board

create a board and drag your pedals onto the canvas in signal order. draw cables between jacks to document the routing, then snapshot the whole board as a single preset.

library

the library holds pre-built devices plus anything you have made yourself. search matches name, manufacturer, and category, and resolves brand aliases along the way.

filter by brand from the dropdown. results page in as you scroll. your own templates sit alongside the built-in ones.

device page

the device page is the pedal itself, rendered to scale. drag any knob vertically to turn it. hold shift while dragging for fine control. double-click a knob to return it to centre.

footswitches toggle on and off. where a pedal has a multi-colour led, each press cycles to the next state before turning off — useful for pedals with mode indicators.

zoom runs from 25% to 300%. on a phone the pedal scales to fit, and you can pinch the canvas directly.

presets

every preset belongs to a device. save as many as you like — there is no cap. rename them, mark favourites, and keep a notes field per preset for the context you will have forgotten by next month.

overwrite a preset to capture the current knob positions in place. the presets page groups everything by device and searches across preset names, device names, and manufacturers.

boards

a board is a free-form canvas. add pedals from the picker, drag them into place, and rotate them 90 degrees where the real board has them sideways.

draw cables between jacks to record signal flow — click a jack, click waypoints to route around other pedals, then click the destination jack. knobs stay live on the board, so you can adjust a pedal without leaving the layout.

board presets snapshot every pedal's knob values at once. that is your whole rig for one song, recallable in a click. boards auto-save as you work.

builder

the builder makes a device that does not exist in the library yet. it runs in three steps: set up the enclosure, place the controls, review.

start faster by cloning: type a brand, pick one of its pedals, and choose use layout to copy its dimensions and control positions. relabel from there.

upload a photo of the real device as a reference underlay, drop it to a low opacity, and place controls straight over it. available control types are knobs, toggles, three-way toggles, sliders, footswitches, jacks, power, led buttons, and screens.

sizes are in millimetres or inches — toggle whichever you think in. enclosure dimensions come from presets or you can set them by hand and drag the edges.

sharing

export a preset or board as a png with the knobs in position — the thing to paste into a group chat or tape to a setlist.

share links and json export/import are being tested and are not available yet.

if you build a template worth sharing, submit it to the community library. submissions are reviewed before they appear.

your data

presets, boards, templates, and your unit preference live in this browser's local storage. they never leave your device unless you submit a template to the community library.

that means no account is needed to use knob notes fully — and it also means clearing your browser data deletes your work. a full backup/ export is on the way; for now, be careful with your browser data. an account currently covers community submissions; cloud sync across devices is on the way.

see privacy for what is stored and how to have it removed.
